You might be wondering what to expect in therapy. The experience can vary depending on the combination of personalities, issues, and techniques that show up in the room. Here are a few things I think are handy to be aware of:
There is some paperwork in the beginning - this helps me get to know you and gives you even more information about the process.
Sometimes it gets worse before it gets better.
The bulk of the work happens within you (and your relationships) outside of the therapy room, in between sessions.
Change happens when you are ready for it to happen.
The majority of what determines your satisfaction level in therapy is how you get along with, and feel connected to, your therapist. Whether or not that is me, advocating for yourself is highly encouraged. If you don’t click with your therapist, bringing that up in session and figuring out how to move forward is an important part of the work.
The focus is on you, not the other - that can be difficult.
Ideally you feel empathy, compassion, and non-judgment from your therapist.
